Greeting depends on a lot
This Classical Life
discusses
Church Greeters, thinking it feels odd to have someone welcome you to a family gathering as if it were Wal-Mart. Maybe we have more places to get lost at
New Life, but there's a lot to be said for making sure (in a church of many hundred) that
- someone obviously confused can find the worship service, the nursery, or the Sunday School rooms (well, it's a huge old restaurant building, with labyrinths of passageways in dark places—we could lose four visitors each Sunday and not find them for a year)
- there's a face there near the entrance that identifies the church as a human place, a welcoming place, hopefully a safe place, maybe even a Third Place.
- somebody expedites getting that Sunday newspaper we call a bulletin into as many hands as possible.
